From the Swiss Alps to the Dunes of Dubai, an interview conducted with Ioana Anghel!

A graduate of the class 2015 from Vatel Switzerland, Romanian alumna, Ioana Anghel today works in Dubai and is living her dream, working in the luxury hotel industry. She currently works as the Sales Director at the Kempinki Hotel.

Ioana, why did you choose to study at Vatel Switzerland?

“When I was 17, it was difficult to make a choice about continuing my studies. There are a lot of schools and different specializations to choose from. I decided on Vatel Switzerland when I saw its training program. Indeed it was the perfect mix between business courses such as (Marketing, Human Resources, Management, ….), and more specifically on the hotel management courses such as ( wine & spirits, nutrition,…). In addition to the theoretical courses, it also attracted me thanks to the experiences gained on the field at Hotel Vatel and the internship periods either in Switzerland or abroad. One of the highlights of the Swiss campus is its international aspect of having over 30 nationalities living on campus”.

What is your current position and mission?

“ I am currently the Director of Sales in Groups and Events at the Kempinski Hotel  Dubai*****.I started this new job three months ago after 2 years of experience as a Sales Manager at the Fairmont Hotel ***** in Dubai. My mission is to develop our visibility with MICE clients (Meeting, Incentive, and Conference & Exhibitions). It’s my responsibility to make sure that Kempinski Dubai becomes the top reference for conferences and events”.

Why settle in Dubai?

“The hotel business in Dubai can be compared to the fashion world in Paris. With more than 600 hotels and 114,000 rooms; it’s an amazing playground. Each year more and more hotel brands are present. Therefore there is an ample amount of opportunities. This is the perfect place to boost my career”.

What was your best memory of Vatel or internship experience?

“In first year, not only in courses but also in practical at Hotel Vatel, we had to do service. I will always remember those long discussions I had with my classmates when we polished hundreds of glasses after an event. At the time it was not the best moment but we look back at that moment and laugh a lot!”
