After several weeks of beginning this unique MBA Program, Myriam Berkhane answers our questions.
What was your background before starting this MBA?
After obtaining my French Baccalauréat at the Lycée Français in Zurich, I joined Vatel Switzerland with the aim of making a career in Hotel Management and Tourism. I chose Vatel for the mix of practical and theoretical learning but especially for its recognition by professionals within the industry. At Vatel, internships can take place in Switzerland but also internationally. In my experience, I decided to do my internships in Switzerland. My first internship took place at the Hotel Mirador ***** on the hills of Vevey and the second internship was at the Beau Rivage in Geneva*****.
Why continue with an MBA after your Bachelor?
In order to consolidate our knowledge acquired during the Bachelor Degree, the MBA provides us the essential tools for the analysis and management of projects. In addition to Finance, we have modules on Human Resources, Intercultural Management, Marketing, Sales, Communications, and Project Management. The combination of the operational knowledge acquired during the Bachelor and the managerial skills learnt during the MBA, enables a graduate to easily access a management position.
Could you tell us more about the actual case studies?
During the MBA, we had the opportunity to work on real cases and brainstorm various strategies to put in place. The analysis and plans we develop are applied to external companies who face certain problems in their business model.
In the first year, we developed a digital marketing strategy for a hotel that struggled to invest in marketing. In the second year, we had several ongoing projects, one in which was a feasibility study and a communication plan for a Swiss company that wanted to build a hotel residence. These actual cases provide us with real data to analyze and real goals to achieve. They allow us to better work in a team and to understand all the stages of a project’s development.
