Mrs. Conchon, a Marketing teacher at Vatel Switzerland, went with her 2nd year students to Verbier, the famous ski resort in Switzerland. This was the occasion to meet professionals in the tourism and hospitality sector.

In order to better understand the course and the purpose of this day, Mrs. Conchon tells us more:

“As part of the 2nd year marketing courses, students must give me a market study for the launch of a new concept in Verbier (concerning a hotel, restaurant, bar, and/or club.) This famous alpine resort in the Canton of Valais in Switzerland, has been nominated as Switzerland’s Best Ski Resort at the World Ski Awards. During each class, I give them a course on a marketing theme and they work on their assigned project the 2nd hour of the class. They are evaluated throughout the year and must make a written report and after submit it in class.”

Why go to this area?

Verbier is very interesting as it’s an international and competitive market. Going into the field allows students to better understand the marketing tools studied in 1st and 2nd year and then applying them to a personalized project that interests them…theirs!

In addition, they meet professionals that are passionate about their job, their industry and their mountains which in turn helps motivate students. With this application, there is a real use of theory and practice.”

Who did you meet?

“We started our day with the Director of Verbier Development, Mr. Gremaud who explained to us the various developments for tourism in Verbier, especially concerning the summer season. Then we met the President of the Kings Group ( La Cordée des Alpes, Le Mouton Noir, and others), Mr. Bratter, as well as Mrs. Chambrier from the Chalet d’Adrien. It seems essential to me that the students remain closer to the reality of the market: discuss and interact with the industry professionals, and at times work from home. This gives another real dimension to marketing!

What did the students think?

“Everything that has been learned since the first year in marketing has been developed and applied to the market in Verbier. After their visit, the students adapted their product, redefined their targets, thus reemphasizing their thought process in marketing. They enjoyed learning in a different and unconventional way, and were inspired by the speeches of these professionals.”
