Interview of an hospitality expert - Vatel

Interview of an hospitality expert

For this special interview we choose to highlight the remarkable profile of Daniel Fuchs, our Dean for International Programs. He has 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry, with a bachelor and a master degree in finance, enhanced with a PHD in Human Resources. He began his career in F&B in 1980.

What is your professional background?

“Food service manager in Florida in 1980 then I moved to Ramada Hotel Corporation where I was the director of food and beverages in the Caribbean and other places. I then climbed to become one Ramada’s youngest GM, in the USA in Chicago and later on Executive Vice President.

Returning to my native Switzerland I worked in a Hospitality school and was Dean of 2 Swiss Hotel schools.

Shortly after, I ran a hotel company of 22 proprieties, which had to be saved from bankruptcy.

I started working in Thailand in 2000, set up my own hotel company with 7 hotels  and acquired several luxury hotel projects as a Consultant.

I sold the corporation in 2006 and shortly after I helped a friend opening a five stars luxury hotel in Koh Samui in 2006. During my time in Thailand, I taught in top 5 universities in Thailand including Vatel Bangkok. Because I love sharing my knowledge. My last position in Thailand was Chief Operating Officer of a local Hotel company.

I then started working for Vatel Switzerland last year, as a part time faculty, but then was asked to take more responsibilities."

With such an amazing career why did you choose to teach?

“I never left teaching because it is a passion to share. I worked with brilliant people who taught me a lot of things. It is time to pass the knowledge. I see the difference between the first, the second year and third year students which is most gratifying to see them grow. I accepted the administrative position with one request: keep teaching.”

What is your vision about academic director?

“I would like to push Vatel and be unique, not only another Vatel school. Start to innovate! I believe if we challenge our student in the right way, they will reach new heights. I don’t want to be good but great! Good is the enemy of great. I want Vatel Switzerland to become the most innovative place to study in Switzerland.” I also wish to use the strength and reputation of the entire Vatel Group.

Do you have any advice for Vatel Switzerland students?

“Keep in mind that you work for a business, forget about “guest”! A guest does not pay for a coffee! But we have customers and our customers should feel as guests. I would address a message for Vatel Students: Take the good and the bad and learn from both, get over it, take the experiences and learn from it. Negativity will handicap you, in your outcome.”
